Expeditions may include mountain biking, rock climbing, backpacking, spelunking, paddling, whitewater rafting, wilderness survival and more. Adventure Seekers will explore the best of the Maine and New Hampshire wildernesses on trips specially designed for different ages and abilities. All trips are led by Wilderness First Responders and Outdoor Specialists. The trips have been developed by Jeremy Robichaud, our Director of Adventure Recreation. He is a Registered Maine Guide, a Wilderness EMT, a Nationally Registered EMT, a Level II Project Adventure Instructor, and an instructor for SOLO Wilderness Medical School. Jeremy is a professional rock climbing guide and instructor, who is licensed by both the American Mountain Guide Association and the Professional Climbing Instructors Association.
LEADERS SCHOOL
Through group problem-solving competitions, intense physical challenges, unique traditions, and guided reflection, Leaders School helps shape teens into leaders. This is a pedal-to-the-metal week of excitement, formulated by experts in the field of experiential learning and group development. Leaders are pushed to their limits, encouraged to “slay their dragons”, and make connections from their Leaders School experience to their everyday lives. Graduates of this program become charged with a greater sense of self-worth, purpose, and obligation to improve the world around them.
Leaders School relies upon a perpetually-changing but time-tested model of outdoor adventure-education to push kids to explore their physical and mental limits, all the while maintaining a fun and supportive atmosphere that emphasizes “Challenge by Choice”. The two one-week programs are divided by age group between middle school and high school, and are primarily run at the Bangor Y’s Wilderness Center at Camp Jordan. At the core of the Leaders programming, however, are its “Challenge Days” expeditions that take campers all over the state. Young leaders can paddle canoes or kayaks along Moosehead Lake and the Penobscot or St. Croix rivers, sea kayak in Casco Bay, mountain bike through Acadia National Park, go rock climbing in Clifton, or hike Mt. Bigelow or Katahdin. Through introspection and experiential learning in a safe but challenging outdoor environment, leaders learn about themselves while gaining an appreciation for Maine’s natural treasures.
While at Leaders School, teens are challenged by Low and High Ropes Course elements to strengthen self image and build team skills. In addition to more standard classes such as archery, riflery and orienteering, leaders can also participate in Traveling Minstrels (music), Teen Talk (discussions about issues that affect youth), and Energy Infusion Theatre (performing arts). Campers build communication skills, develop teamwork, learn the dynamics of a group, discover themselves and shape goals for the future. The Bangor YMCA Leaders School program has graduated more than 4,200 young leaders in its 41 year history. The relationships and skills they build at Leaders School remain a part of their lives forever.
THE BANGOR YMCA WILDERNESS CENTER AT CAMP JORDAN offers so many choices all summer long, and the common thread is that every program will bring incredible growth, skills, friendship, and fun. Set on a 200 acre campus along the shores of Branch Lake in the beautiful Maine wilderness, our Sleep Away Camp, Adventure Seekers, and Leaders School give boys, girls, and teens of all ages and interests a sense of adventure, belonging, and purpose. These programs allow a child to progress and grow each year in our specially designed age appropriate adventures. Our goal is to partner with parents throughout their child’s life.
The Bangor YMCA’s Wilderness Center provides an idyllic group of resources in which to explore opportunities for personal growth and the enhancement of outdoor skills. The bedrock of our philosophy focuses on the value of experiential learning and encourages self-discovery through the wonders of the Maine environment.
The Bangor YMCA Wilderness Center at Camp Jordan has been fostering friendships, changing lives, and creating leaders for 106 years. We have established traditions and purposeful programming that encourages character building and leadership skills through the core values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility. Everyone is encouraged to take these life lessons home and contribute to their own families and communities.
Our programs are formulated to reflect the appropriate challenges of each stage of child development. As youth grow and gain a sense of comfort within our programs, they are encouraged to try new activities and new programs to gain a sense of challenge and mastery. Often children who begin with our Sleep Away Camp rise through the ranks, challenging themselves physically on Adventure Seekers expeditions as they grow older, moving on to our LIT and CIT programs, and capping each summer as a teenager with the Leaders School experience. Our programs for older teens bridge the gap between finding one’s personal strength and being a responsible member of a home community. Our Wilderness Center’s camper diversity brings this conversation globally and fosters discussions among tomorrow’s leaders from around the world.
The cabin group is the heart of our program, and we have recently made our cabin groups smaller to foster a closer bond between counselors and cabin-mates. Cabins eat together during each meal, participate in cabin challenges together, and spend “embers”, a time of reflection, sharing their day around a candle every night before bed. Veteran campers think of camp as their second home, a place where they feel appreciated, accepted for who they are, and at peace with themselves. It is our goal that every child develops this sense of connection with our community and our program.
ACCREDITATION: We are accredited by the American Camp Association, ensuring that we hold ourselves to the highest industry standards. The camp complies with all regulations of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.
At the Bangor YMCA Wilderness Center at Camp Jordan, we pride ourselves on providing a staff that live out the YMCA core values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility. Every staff person receives extensive training, preparing them to provide the best possible physical and emotional environment for your child. All counselors are First Aid and CPR certified, and we employ two live-in health professionals and have an MD on call for reference to ensure that every camper’s medical needs are met at all times. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker visits us regularly to communicate with staff about their campers’ experiences and challenges.
CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: LEADERS SCHOOL
The Bangor YMCA Wilderness Center at Camp Jordan's Leaders School is one of the most profound leadership development programs in the Northeast.
LIT/CIT
The Bangor YMCA Wilderness Center at Camp Jordan's LIT and CIT programs culminate the Sleep Away Camp experience. They provide teens with a strong set of skills they can use as future camp counselors and leaders in their communities. Our teen leadership development programs are some of the most comprehensive of their kind. Sixteen year olds begin with a two-week LIT program, which focuses on skill acquisition, team-building, personal development, goal setting, and community service. The CIT program is geared toward 17 year olds who aspire to work in childcare and continue as a leader at camp. During this three week program, participants learn the skills needed to care for children in a camp setting, develop interpersonal relationships, and work alongside members of the camp staff. Additionally, CITs will earn certifications in CPR and First Aid.
Many LIT and CIT participants were former campers who return to become volunteers and staff members, thus providing the legacy of energy and talent that has preserved more than 106 years of Bangor YMCA Wilderness Center at Camp Jordan tradition.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: In 1999, I was directing science camps for the Children’s Museum of Maine and had taught science at Scarborough Middle School and Westbrook College and was (and still am) a docent at the Portland Museum of Art. I told my family I wanted to create experiences for children that melded my love of science with my passion for art. My husband replied: “Science and art—sounds like Leonardo DaVinci!” Certified teachers collaborated
with me to develop a science and arts curriculum with theme-based programs and The DaVinci Experience was born!
At DaVinci Experience camps, whether it’s dinosaurs, drawing or building catapults, your children will follow their passions or discover new ones. They’ll make friends with children who may attend their local school or be visiting from another state or country. Campers will find mentors who inspire them to try new things and they’ll have the opportunity to explore new themes each week.
Mature, experienced teachers lead small groups of similar aged campers. Our low camper to staff ratio allows your children to fully participate in hands-on science activities, art projects and outdoor games. Their experiences are enriched by meeting guests from the community, as diverse as doctors and veterinarians to dancers and African drummers.
At DaVinci Experience we are building an inclusive community of learners and we would love to have your family join us!

We have 20 cabins with private bathrooms, 9 tennis courts, 2 baseball diamonds, 1 outdoor basketball court, 12 target archery range, 275 yard golf range, 9 hole chipping course, outdoor climbing facility, collegiate hockey rink, 3 soccer fields, 2 lacrosse fields, and a 10,000 square foot gymansium.
CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Our program offers a wealth of activities and programs. Most mornings, campers rotate with their bunk through three one-hour instructional periods. Over the course of a week, this exposes them to all the camp’s land and water sports, its extensive ropes course with high and low elements, as well as creative and culinary arts. This instruction uncovers new interests that campers often pursue in the afternoon, when they select three activities of their own. These “electives” change daily and allow campers to be self-directed. Having had Caribou in our family since 1968, we are confident that boys learn best with this combination of instructional and elective time.
Our staff takes a great interest in reaching out to our campers. They try to uncover new interests, improve on current interests and act as mentors to your children. They are passionate about what they teach. We as Directors also teach in the program. We love knowing and working with all of the campers. Camp Caribou is on a private and beautiful 200 acre peninsula. The facilities are fabulous and well maintained. Camp Caribou traditionally has a winning combination of wonderful campers, outstanding staff, and great facilities. This special combination provides a spirited, memorable, fun and safe summer experience for all.
CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: “The Caribou Collaborative Initiative, or CCI, is non-profit organization dedicated to sharing the Camp Caribou experience with deserving children whose families could not otherwise afford this type of opportunity. Our goal is to raise funds to support these “camperships” so that children may benefit from the tremendous growth that happens in our warm, safe and nurturing camp community. In addition to their personal and social growth, these children will have the opportunity to develop their skills in all the land and water sports and wilderness adventures that are offered at Camp Caribou, while spending their summer in the beautiful Maine woods. We will work in conjunction with several other non-profit youth programs out of Boston and New York City and rural Maine to help us support children from underrepresented backgrounds.
OTHER CAMP INFO: Caribou campers develop increased confidence as our experienced staff teaches them new skills and helps them improve existing strengths. Parents often ask, “Who is the typical Caribou kid?” Our answer is always that we attract the “what’s next?” kids—kids who love to learn and be active, are willing to try new things, and respond very well to the positive reinforcement of their counselors and peers. Caribou boys are fun-loving, warm, and welcoming. They represent a cross section of athletic abilities, very similar to a school classroom. Some are gifted athletes, some are boys with growing interest and skills in various sports, and some are just learning and beginning to develop. The only prerequisite is that they are interested in learning and love to play. Camp Caribou boys are also known for their excellent sportsmanship. Our philosophy is that we win with class and we lose with class.

CAMP FACILITIES: Our facilities are modern yet not flashy. Campers live in one of 34 comfortable screened cabins. The younger boys generally have 6 boys and 2 counselors in a cabin while the majority of boys have 4 or 5 campers and 1 counselor per cabin. There is no shortage of places to go and explore at camp. We have more than 65 buildings and campers easily find what interests them.
Many of the activities including Photography (outfitted with a fully-equipped darkroom), Nature, Arts & Crafts, and Video are housed in their own buildings. We also have our own radio station and a wonderful theater. Several large buildings allow for the entire camp to convene, and we even have a Ping Pong building where boys can play in their free time.
Meals are enjoyed in our spacious dining hall, one of the original camp buildings, which features a lofted ceiling and fieldstone fireplace. Our athletic facilities are top-notch. We have more fields than we can use at one time and count 7 Har-Tru tennis courts, 3 softball/baseball diamonds, 2 basketball courts, 2 soccer fields, a clay and a beach volleyball court, and a sprawling low and high ropes course.
Our waterfront features a beach area where boys can play, a shallow water area for teaching beginner swimmers, a six-lane floating pool built into the lake, a deep water area with a high dive and waterslide, and a separate dock system that accommodates our sailing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing and waterskiing programs.
CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Winnebago walks a fine line between creating a competitive atmosphere and understanding that success lies in the effort a camper gives rather than the outcome. As society becomes more results focused, we continue to insist on the process. Yes, Winnebagans do achieve extremely high results. However, boys understand that being supportive of each other is what makes a lasting difference a difference that helps foster leadership and builds emotional and physical self-confidence.
The Winnebago program affords campers an opportunity to gain skills (and confidence) in a broad range of activities; many of which they would not necessarily have access to at home. Campers enjoy athletic instruction and competition (amongst each other and other camps) in a variety of sports that include baseball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, street hockey and tennis. Campers swim twice daily, build skills in a number of other more individual activities such as archery, sailing, video, drama, photography and waterskiing, and explore the beauty of Maine on both day and overnight camping trips.
Our trip program is outstanding. Each age group embarks on two overnight camping trips each summer usually one canoeing and one hiking. The trips are thoughtfully planned out to appropriately challenge boys in a safe yet meaningful way. Most campers return from their trips emboldened by their efforts and with a sense of accomplishment.
Campers and alumni consistently remark that experiences on trips are some of their most profound memories. Wherever Winnebagans go during the summer, people remark how nice, thoughtful, interested and interesting they are. This is a product both of who the campers are and of the culture we create at camp a culture where boys understand that being nice and respectful to one another is important and easy.
CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: The Winnebago Alumni Association (WAA) provides the opportunity for boys to attend Winnebago who do not have the financial resources to attend Camp Winnebago. The WAA brings alumni together and commits to provide the financial assistance for a multi-year experience. The Alumni Association helps select those boys who will benefit from its scholarship programs. - See more at: Our Camp Website Link: campwinnebago.com

CAMP FACILITIES: Facilities and accommodations vary from trip to trip.
CAMP PROGRAM INFO: The Road Less Traveled as an organization was founded by Jim and Donna Stein in 1991, and has been successfully running safe, exciting, life-changing trips for teens ever since. Both Jim and Donna are still the current directors, and are integrally involved in every single aspect of the company. In the summer, they are on call 24/7, available both to parents as well as to our leaders in the field.
We are an ACA accredited organization with an impeccable track record. We believe in the process of accreditation. It allows us to compare our standards to other professionals in the industry. Our accreditation allows us to follow specific standards related to leader screening including use of application forms, reference checks, personal interviews, work history review, and background checks.
Many years ago, we were the first company serving young adults to require that all leaders have a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) medical certification. WFR training is far more advanced than standard first aid or wilderness first aid. In addition to this certification, we carry extensive first aid kits on all of our programs that include antibiotics and epinephrine. Contents, protocols, and standing orders are reviewed and updated every year by our Medical Director who is an MD.
Since our inception, RLT has been on the cutting edge of technological advances in communication. We began carrying Iridium satellite phones on all of our programs as soon as they were available. Today we continue to carry the latest in emergency communication systems. According to geographic location, programs are equipped with satellite phones, ground-to-air radios, and/or cellular phones providing the possibility of 24-hour access to medical help in case of emergency.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Carrying on a tradition of high standards since its founding in 1919, Tapawingo is known as one of the country’s finest private, independent camps for girls.
The value of the camp experience is extremely important at Tapawingo. Next to safety, our primary goal is that each camper return home at the end of the summer feeling better about herself. We know that campers will have tons of fun, learn wonderful skills in their activities, and make lifelong friends. But above all, we know that it is at Tapawingo where they will learn how to be leaders, how to be true friends, and how to be themselves. Tapawingo is a safe place for the development of character and values: judgment, personal responsibility, and independence.
We provide encouragement, encouragement and more encouragement – to assure that each girl develops independence and self-confidence. We do not award trophies for the best athlete or best camper. Any camper may sign up to be on a Tapawingo team; she does not need to try out. We are a cheering and singing kind of place, where a child strives to do her very best.
Tapawingo’s call for fun and adventure is contagious – between 80 and 90 percent of our kids come back to Tapawingo, year after year, and many bring their friends. Tradition is a cornerstone of our camp. Many Tapawingo campers are second-generation campers, and some are third.

Activity Counselors teach a specific activity (Tennis, Waterskiing, Rock Climbing, etc.) throughout the day. General Counselors work with our youngest campers (ages 7-10), travel to/from their activities and help them in their activities. Activity Counselors and General Counselors share many commonalities. All counselors live in a cabin with campers, eat meals with their campers, spend Rest Hour and Rec Time with them, supervise cabin clean-ups and participate in evening programs and special day events.
In addition to Counseling Staff, we also hire staff to work in our Summer Office, Health Center (Nurses and Nursing Assistants), on our Food Service Staff and Maintenance Staff.

A golden globe has been buried somewhere on earth – and it contains the key to a safe deposit box holding a $10,000 college scholarship fund. Participants who complete an hour of online summer learning activities each day will unlock secret animated webisodes that hold the clues to the globe’s whereabouts. Guess the treasure’s location first, and you’ll be the one on a plane to dig it up.
Enrollment is limited to the first 5,000 entrants.
Kickoff is June 30. Last registration July 18.
- See more at: Our Camp Website Link: brainchase.com
CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Additional children from same household are half off for each registration.
OTHER CAMP INFO: You spend 10 months of every year in school, but much of that hard work likely vanishes during summer break. Who wants to do boring worksheets when school’s out? Brain Chase is a summer enrichment program that’s FUN. Action-packed animations, mysterious packages in the mail, and the hunt for buried treasure turn learning into an adventure. It’s FLEXIBLE. You’ll do the challenge when you want, where you want, and at your own pace. And it’s CUSTOMIZED. You get to work at your own level. - See more at: Our Camp Website Link: brainchase.com
